This term can be interpreted a number of different ways. When I was first introduced to the term, it was described as a nursing home for legacy/archived data. The thought was that it is one big database that stores older information from one or more other databases. Sometimes it’s information may be exported out for data mining or other research projects.

I just looked the term up on wikipedia and it is described much the same way. I’ve seen data warehoused in FileMaker but they are somewhat rare.
