Data Tunneling

Data Tunneling

CATEGORY: Relationships
CLASS: Relational Design
VERSION: All Current Versions

Data tunneling is a term often referred to when a FileMaker table pulls data from another table, through a relationship that goes through one or more other tables. A join table is a classic example of data tunneling but there are tunnels that do not include a join table.

One of the most classic examples of a data tunnel is the line items on an invoice. You can be on an invoice record, doing data entry in a portal for line items that is pulling data from an inventory file.

Another classic example is a solution where you have a teacher, classes and students. You can have be on the teacher layout and see the students assigned to the teacher in a portal. The data is actually being pulled through the classes the teacher and student have in common.
