Highlighting

Highlighting

CATEGORY: Design
CLASS: Advanced Design

Highlighting is a method of giving a layout object a highlight color to give the user a visual indication of where they are or some special about the record. A common FileMaker example is when a user wants to highlight a portal row or perhaps a invoice balance due field could automatically become bold bright red when over 30 days due.

All the way up to FileMaker 8.5, there wasn’t a feature built into FileMaker to perform this type of action. It could only be accomplished by using techniques using calculations, global fields and layout tricks. With FileMaker 9, we were given a new feature called conditional formatting.

Your options for the conditional formatting include the font, font style, font size, font color and the fill color for the object selected. You have the ability to choose from a predefined set of options, which is quite nice. If you need additional power and flexibility, you can create your own set of conditions via a calculation! You can apply the formatting to fields, text objects on the layout, the Web Viewer and buttons created with FileMaker button tool.
