CATEGORY: Working With FileMaker
CLASS: Files
A FileMaker file can have multiple data tables within it and a FileMaker file can be linked to other data sources that have data tables. In most cases, the other data source will be another FileMaker file but it can also include external SQL data sources. Both local FileMaker files and those files available on a network can be setup as external data sources.

The ability to add or edit external data sources is done via the Manage External Data Sources dialog box. This dialog box is accessible via the menus of File > Manage > External Data Source.

When these data sources are added at table occurrences in the relationship graph, they can be used in relationships, layouts, calculations and more. You can even setup an external source on the fly, as you add a new table occurrence to your graph.

You can also use external data sources as the conduit for running scripts within an external FileMaker file.
