Data Cleansing

Data Cleansing

CATEGORY: Working With Data
CLASS: Consistency

Data Cleansing is a term often given to the process of reviewing data within a database and updating it for consistency. For example, you may have a database that has a field to hold address state information. It is quite possible that you have data entered such as WA and Washington. These two entries represent the same information but the data is not the same. This inconsistent data entry will cause problems with searches, sorting routines and reports (which rely heavily on searches and sorts).

In many cases, large scale data cleansing takes place when migrating data from one system to the next or rolling out a new collection of information reports.
